Researchers scanned the surface of liver cysts with an electron microscope. The surface contained: hormone receptors, insulin growth hormone receptors and growth hormone receptors. Octreotide inhibits growth hormone; inhibits insulin growth hormone; and inhibits estrogen like hormones.

Octreotide is the first drug ever thought to be useful for PLD. It is the earliest drug in clinical trials with PLD, Polycystic Liver Disease. These trials are going on around the world: Italy, Belgium, Netherlands, USA Rochester Minnesota to test for the efficacy and if it will reduce cystic liver size.
