Yucca cane
(Yucca elephantipes)
Yucca cane (Yucca elephantipes) is harmful if eaten. Yucca genus plants contain the toxin saponins, which are harmful to cats as well as dogs and horses and grazing livestock. Yucca is just one of the many plants that contains this potentially dangerous steroidal compound, saponins. Grazing animals -- such as cows, sheep and other livestock -- that nibble on the yucca cane throughout the day typically experience more serious problems such as liver disease and secondary photosensitization.
Confusion about yucca cane, comes from a similarly pronounced plant called yuca a root vegetable used in Puerto Rican cooking. (Unrelated to yucca) Yuca is known as cassava (Manihot esculenta), tapioca.
