Avoid valerain as it contains liver toxic substances called valepotriates which are detrimental for PKD/PLD. Tell your doctor if you are taking valerian; tell your surgeon if you have taken it and be sure to let anesthesia know. Valerian increases barbiturate induced sleep in animals. Caution is suggested with valerian and other anesthetics for surgery. A single case report of a person treated for coronary artery disease who experienced cardiac and mental disturbances linked to an interaction with digoxin & valerian. If you do take it, to be safe, put it aside two weeks prior to any surgery.
