No GMO: More

Avoid All Genetically Modified GMO Products

Hawaii is home to the largest GMO seed manufacturing in the world. To my disappointment, I discovered that locally grown Hawaiian corn (which I happen to love) can be genetically modified GMO or genetically engineered GE.

GMO corn has been modified so it can withstand a ton of round up and yet it will remain standing. Also the corn gene is crossed with genes from a bacteria. We are now seeing some super plants that withstand massive amounts of round up spray. We are also seeing the near extinction of many bugs, larvae, and butterflies because of this genetic modification. Because of this the formula for round up continually undergoes modification. This is in part why long term studies of the effects of round up spray on humans are very scarce. Doctors have said the amount of allergies is increasing in the aging population when normally there has been a decrease in allergies with age.

Long term studies on the effects of genetically modified plants have never been done. But physicians are now finding a new previously unknown bacteria in the intestines of humans.

Sometimes organic grown corn seed can become contaiminated through the waifing tropical breezes. Initially I couldn't understand why my liver felt as if it was expanding slightly and I would find myself awakening in the morning with liver pains. I had attributed this to aging but after watching a PBS show: Insights in Hawaii: GMO crops I learned that 80% of soy and corn in the USA are GMO modified so these two crops can withstand a ton of round up sprayed on them! Roundup is especially harmful to a cystic liver. The tests with roundup test only the active ingredient not the true product sprayed on crops. This formula changes yearly as the crops get used to roundup. I enjoy local Hawaiian corn and search out non sprayed local corn.

Papaya - Non GMO Hawaii

Non-GMO papaya seeds available to the public in limited quantities starting October 1, 2010 from the University of Hawai'i (UH) seed program. Sunrise and Waimanalo X-77 (low bearing) varieties will be available. A true, non-GE papaya has a rich, deeply yellowflesh, not golden or even pink or red like the hybrids. The real deal is called the "Kapoho" or "Kapoho Solo" papaya, so look for this name if you can.

Check the Attached Sticky Labels

A good strategy is to take a look at those little sticker labels on your papaya. They will contain a PLU code, or number, that will indicate how the fruit was grown:

Genetically modified GMO rainbow papaya developed specifically to withstand bug invasion was developed for shipping. Monsanto owns the rights to GMO rainbow papaya developed by injecting into the papaya genes, genes from an entirely different species; from bacteria. There have been to date no long term testing on humans to see what these effects might be.

Bananas Safe

All bananas grown in Hawaii are safe and have not been genetically modified. All are GMO free. I can safely continue to apple bananas to my liver's content. I suspect squash, Okinawan sweet potatoes are all non GMO. But I will have to find out if this is true.

Rice

GMO rice in Indonesia to attempt to make a shorter growing season for rice, but the result were rice that tasted terrible. Its consistency and taste had been modified. The Indonesians refused to eat genetically modified rice. They refused to purchase it no matter how low the price became. It is likely this GMO rice ended up being exported. Now USA farmers have been using chicken fertilizer in their crops. The chickens have been fed arsenic for various reasons. Arsenic remains in the soil for 45 years or longer. Water that is used on these fields is showing up in produce grown on such fields like rice.

Monsanto and Other Big Chemical Companies

The European Union has been specifically against the import of GE fruits and vegetables and products. New Zealand, and Australia have banned GMO crops in all their infant and children's foods and formulas. These countries have come strongly against GMO crops. Spraying with pesticides and herbicides is harmful.

In Brazil Monsanto owners of roundup and GMO soy sued local farmers when their soy crops became contaminated with GMO soy. They said these farmers could not plant the GMO soy seed. In other places farmers used to take their seed from the previous crop so they did not have to purchase fresh seed for planting. This practice has been outlawed in many states.

I want labeling of GMO fruits and vegetables in place. I want to have a choice and the right to choose to eat something that has NOT been genetically modified. During a televised local debate on genetically engineered foods, the opposing debaters were very slippery when it came to labeling. They admitted putting labels on commercially prepared produce, the cost of re-labeling is minuscule, yet they will not label their GMO produce because if the public knows that this product contains genetically modified produce, we will not purchase it.

Non GMO products search the list Find non GMO choices. Support the efforts of companies that are enrolled in the Non-GMO Project Verification Program.

Censorship in health risk assessment: an example of an herbicide and a GMO

A GMO article previously retracted from pressure has been re-published by the European Union. Long-term toxicity of a Roundup herbicide and a Roundup-tolerant genetically modified maize. Monsanto has the money, the funds to squelch articles, to confuse public opinion about the dangers of GMO crops. Monsanto has even turned around and sued farmers and islands initiatives that were against the use of GMO crops. And the reason for this suit? Why because Monsanto would lose millions of dollars in revenue by allowing consumers to know that their crops have been produced through GMO methods.

Change comes about slowly. Chipotle, a USA fast food chain removes GMO foods from the chain.
