Yerba Maté
Avoid Yerba Maté
(Ilex paraguariensis)
Yerba maté (Ilex paraguariensis), also known as maté, terere, and chimarrão, contains large amounts of caffeine which is detrimental for PKD. Caffeine inhibits the breakdown of cyclic AMP. An increase in cAMP results in more circulating cAMP. This increases cyst growth creating more cysts, increasing organ size and increasing symptoms. It is native to South America where the leaves and branches are prepared as a tea. It contains about 70 mg/100 mL of caffeine (compared with coffee at 57 mg/100 mL). Like with the herb guaraná, caffeine is thought to be responsible for the pharmacologic effects of yerba maté. Chronic ingestion of yerba maté has been associated with esophageal and other cancers.
