Avoid Angelica

The Chinese herb Angelica or dong quai is to be avoided. The root of the herb is normally used. Especially put aside for two weeks prior to any surgery. Angelica or Dong Quai is often called female ginseng. Six different potent coumadin compounds have been isolated from Angelica. Coumadin found in Angelica, is a blood thinner. Kaiser health facility in Northern California USA did a study showing that the herb angelica had no effect in preventing menopausal hot flashes. The essential oil in dong quai contains Ligustilide. This might be useful as an anti-spasmodic.
