PKD DIET

Methionine

Avoid Methionine ↑ Red Meat

Foods that are high in methionine are animal proteins. Restriction of methionine foods helps decrease cancers, especially when coupled with cancer treatments such as chemotherapy.

Restricting the amino acid methionine in the diet provides many of the health and longevity benefits of calorie restriction (at least in mice). The detailed mechanism of methionine-related liver damage and cardiovascular toxicity are poorly understood but do occur with high rates of methionine ingestion. Diet affects your long term prospects for health and degenerative aging illnesses on a sliding scale that is measured in calories and methionine intake. More calories and more methionine is worse for you. Fewer calories and less methionine (assuming you're still obtaining the optimum level of required nutrients) is better for you.

The Life-Span Extension Diet is a caloric restricted diet that is also restricted in methionine containing foods. This is being studied to see if this type of diet can extend life expectancy. It has been shown to do so in the animal model.

Another study is from the book THE CHINA STUDY. The author feels that the link between prostate cancer and eating meat seems as highly coupled as the link between lung cancer and tobacco. Though raised on a dairy farm, the author advocates the vegan diet today; along with Dr. Esselstyn who has some very convincing arguments for enabling cardiac health. Colin Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn are two of the famous speakers on veganism.

Avoiding animal proteins or limiting animal proteins, especially high in methionine foods, seems to promote longevity. The PKD Diet has one either avoid all animal proteins or if this is not possible to try to limit animal protein to 2-3 times a week and consuming the equivalent of 3 ounces for the entire day. Three ounces is the size of a deck of cards for fish, meat, poultry or the size of one dice if it is cheese. If one can avoid these altogether, this seems best.

Foods Highest in Methionine

These following foods are also on the to be avoided list as these are high in methionine.

We are  sharing our experiences with PKD/PLD Diet, an adjunct diet envisioning it complementing a physician's prescribed medical therapy. Consider testing this with your doctor's prior knowledge, who can  adjust it according to your own uniqueness by adding it to your current  treatment.
