Vitamin D

Enjoy Vitamin D

If you supplement with Vitamin D try vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and not the inferior form known as vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is found in yeast. Both of these are converted in the body over a period of weeks into circulating vitamin D. Both are converted in the body over a period of weeks (6)into circulating vitamin D. There are two vitamin D tests ‒1,25(OH)D and 25(OH)D. 25(OH)D is the better marker of overall D status. It is this marker that is most strongly associated with overall health. Ask your physician for 25(OH)D, a vitamin D blood level.

If you start taking vitamin D every day, it will take about six weeks for the circulating vitamin D to reach its peak. Circulating vitamin D then enters the cells where it is finally converted to active vitamin D. If your body does not have sufficient calcium, it will start to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH).  PTH causes your body to take calcium and phosphorous from your bones when the body does not have sufficient calcium.  For increasing bone density try osteoporosis.

Vitamin D is actually a hormone rather than a vitamin. The body makes most of the vitamin D it needs; only about 10% comes from our food. The action of sunlight on our skin produces a substance called cholecalciferol, which is converted by the liver to calcidiol. This is further converted in the kidneys by the enzyme 1?-hydroxylase to calcitriol, the active form of vitamin D. Calcidiol is considered a good indicator of vitamin D levels and is the form that is usually measured by doctors.

What Does Vitamin D Do?

Insufficient vitamin D will weaken both your bones and teeth. Vitamin D in adequate amounts helps the chronic Vitamin D deficiency caused by advanced PKD. Also the renin-angiotensin blood pressure system is helped by lowering blood pressure. A lack of Vitamin D can raise blood pressure.

Calculate Sun Exposure for Vitamin D

This was developed by the Norwegian Institute for Air Research. For Honolulu the Longitude is 21.3069° N, and the latitude is 157.8583° W. This can be found on the web for your particular country.

Research shows that 20 minutes of daily direct sunlight (between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.) will stimulate adequate Vitamin D3 production. This requirement seems to increase with age.

It was discovered that chronic vitamin D deficiency increases PKD symptoms. Get your vitamin D level checked yearly; more frequently if you are having an increase in PKD symptoms.

Some have said that high doses of vitamin D need to be taken with vitamin K2 (not K1). This has been tried with children to help retain bone mineral density if they were on long term glucocorticoid therapy. Vitamin K2 (menatetrenone) combined with alfacalcidol has preserved bone mineral density in children on long-term glucocorticoid therapy.

Vitamin D3

Be sure your doctor tests for serum 1,25-dihyroxy D3 levels to determine the proper level of supplementation required. Testing is very important due to the fact that, in a small number of patients, Vitamin D3 supplementation can raise calcium levels to excessively high levels. Testing for 1,25-dihyroxy Vitamin D3, PTH and calcium blood levels should become a part of regular blood work.

Megadoses ↑ Fracture Risk in Older Adults

Vitamin D repletion, in either deficient or insufficient states, is a treatment to prevent kidney failure in ADPKD. How is your vitamin D level? A blood test can easily check this.
However too much can also cause kidney disease.
Not too much, not too little.
Too much, too little in Ireland.
Too much, too little or just right?

Vitamin D, More Effective than Flu Vaccine?

This may help seasonal flu. It will take more than 400 iu/day to accomplish this, according to J. J. Cannell MD epidemiologist. PKD seems to be spurred on by inflammation and his research shows Vitamin D in large doses can decrease inflammation.

Some individuals Vitamin D Can Cause Stomach Problems

If you happen to be among these people, try taking food with Vitamin D and try reducing the dose. Adults the amount is 2000 iu. Stop taking vitamin D immediately and consult your physician if you experience severe stomach pain, excessive thirst and a metal taste in your mouth. Those symptoms, in addition to bone pain and muscle problems, could indicate toxicity.

Some foods high in Vitamin D are:
Mushrooms
Fortified Foods like Grains, Orange Juice, Cereal
Dairy Alternatives (plant yogurt, almond milk)
Kale
Okra
Collards
White beans
