Saffron Tea

Another life saver. This tea will take care of what ever is missed by the lemon juice. It also helps the body to lay down new vessels. Keeps the blood from being slow moving and sluggish and encourages healthy blood vessels without aneurysm.
I have noticed from time to time that I get cramps in my fingers. When I examine my fingers I find that a small blood vessel has burst right along the edge where the cramp begins. This also happens in my toes and my legs. I think this is from PLD polycystic liver disease. I also feel that both saffron and supplemental all natural vitamin E (which I take only when I have cramp) all help prevent future attacks.
Milk thistle, turmeric, artichoke, DIMs (broccoli sprout tablets)

Grains
Yeasted processed white bleached wheat flour baked goods is reported to increase bloating and liver pain.
Spelt, rye, corn, brown rice, black rice, wild rice, kamut, quinoa, millet, all require soaking in water. By soaking grains, nuts, legumes, peas, and beans all overnight or longer rids them of phytates. Spelt is one of the best grains for the liver. It is a wonderful tasting grain but is to be avoided with celiac disease. Sometimes I rough grind it in a food processor and cook it up as a cereal. I leave it cooked in my refrigerator overnight and heat and eat the following morning. When cooked this way, somehow spelt has a slight resemblance to the taste of ground nuts. Or I might flatten spelt into a flake and it tastes similar to oatmeal.
Whole grains either chopped or whole, soaked and then cooked seem to digest easier with a cystic liver. If one is experiences symptoms, try using whole grains and avoiding flour, breads, pastries and especially those made with wheat, white bleached flour and yeast.

After trying this for awhile, then try introducing flattened non yeasted breads such as tortillas, chapattis, naan, pita breads all without yeast. Then if symptoms continue to subside, try introducing non yeasted spelt, rice, corn, rye bread. I bake my own breads without yeast or sugar or honey or with the addition of any other concentrated sugar or sweetener.. I found out quickly by adhering to these pre-preparations of grains, nuts, legumes, this effectively diminishes liver pain and bloating.

Enjoy plenty of whole cooked grains, spelt non yeasted bread, roasted sweet potatoes, cooked sunchokes, artichokes, beets, and greens in daily salads. One salad dressing is olive oil and lemon juice. A sprinkling of a freshly chopped herbs or minced garlic adds a little zest. Vinegar is avoided. It can create an alcohol ferment in the body.

contains some suggestions gathered from our collective experiences - anecdotal knowledge as to what foods we have observed keeps a cystic liver from enlarging. We have checked our abdominal girth measured daily at the same physical point on the body. We have eaten the food, noticed pain, bloating, an increase in girth or other symptoms. Then withdrawn the food for a time observing if the symptoms diminished; then re-starting the food once again observing any return of symptoms. Doctors do not know if diet helps with liver cysts. It has yet to be studied. They do know that caffeine and estrogens increase liver cysts.. Some understand a great deal about cystic organs but observe this through the eyes of physician or of a researcher a view held from another perspective. We are living daily in a physical body with liver cysts or kidney cysts or both. Each of us is unique with our own set of symptoms from various foods. Check with your doctor to be sure that everything here might be beneficial for you. If something makes you feel better than utilize it. If something worsens, then lay it aside.

What is a diet that might keep liver cysts from enlarging?

Plant based diet - maintaining adequate water intake. Part of the job of the liver is to detoxify and metabolize the body wastes converting it to a water-y compound that then can be released by the kidneys. If one can maintain the health of the liver, the kidneys will follow. Alkalinity is one key opening the doorway to health.

The following is an abbreviated sample of what keeps my liver from enlarging. Many of us with liver cysts hold out the hope that you can find your way, that you can ascertain what works specifically for your own uniqueness with cystic liver disease.
Many Doctors are not as familiar with diets that help diminish liver cysts. It has not been studied. We have collected empirical knowledge among our own experiences of living with cystic livers. We alone have been privy to daily feedback from our cystic organs by pain and discomfort received about which foods, chemicals, and environmental factors seem to help. Check with your doctor to be sure that any changes you might wish to make are beneficial for you.

AVOID ANIMAL PROTEINS or Limit the quantity of animal proteins to 3 ounces of meat or 1 ounce of dairy 2 times per week. . Keep portions small and have only occasionally - no more frequently than once a week.

Researchers from Spain, scanned the surface of liver cysts and found the surface to contain hormone receptors, insulin growth hormone receptors and growth hormone receptors. Octreotide (a drug in clinical trials) inhibits growth hormone; inhibits insulin growth hormone; and inhibits estrogen like hormones. This is how octreotide first came to be considered as a possible treatment for liver cysts. This helps to explain why animal proteins seem to increase liver pain, bloating and PLD symptoms. These foods naturally contain growth hormone and some have additional hormones added such as bovine growth hormone, or steroids or estrogen or other hormones. During the healing phase of a liver resection, I had thought it was a no holds barred diet. With this latest research paper, I have changed my mind. If it is possible for one to continue to avoid certain foods this seems best: alcohol, sugars, concentrated sweets, fat, cream, dairy, milk, cheese, beef, poultry, fried foods, fatty foods, bleach, and caffeine. Some may find this comes about naturally by an aversion to these foods during recovery with a longing for sour, crispy, and truly fresh fruits and vegetables similar to green granny smith apples, crispy greens, sour lemons, grapefruit, and more. Some can taste the metal in canned vegetables served in the hospital food.

ANIMAL PROTEINS
Some have been able to facilitate diminished cystic liver symptoms by stopping all animal products-all dairy, eggs, cheese, milk, meat, fish, poultry, game, lamb, broths, hamburger or ground meats (especially harmful in triggering intense pain)
Oily fish has been observed to increase liver cyst pain. Not sure of the reason. It could be the mercury in combination with the fish oil itself. Cod liver oil and fish oil supplements are reported to increase liver pains. Poultry, chicken, turkey, even organic, even smart chickens, (though some are raised without added hormones) are dipped in bleach bath to prevent the spread of any residual salmonella. This bleach bath seems to create liver aches. Wild game does not have this effect. All ground meats create both kidney and liver pains. Some have experienced that drinking milk shakes and eating French fries creates liver aches.

LAMB - ANIMAL PROTEINS
Lamb has different molecular protein structure than beef. Beef or cows eat grasses that have the residual pesticides still present, long after these chemicals have been banned from farming. Beef cuts that are marbled are said to be the choicest. This marbling that makes the meat so tender is fat. Hormones are stored in the fat tissue and it is these hormones plus the chemicals from the grasses eaten from contaminated soil that is harmful.

ANIMAL PROTEINS - BETTER CHOICES
If it is not possible for you to eliminate all animal foods there are some better choices than others:
non oily fish once or twice a month 2 ounces ;
lamb 3 ounces (one lamb chop) ;
cottage cheese (2 ounces) ;
plain yogurt with added acidophilus (a half a cup; open an acidophilus capsule and add the powder to this half a cup);

DAIRY - ANIMAL PROTEINS

For liver cysts all dairy contains hormones. It comes from lactating cows that are oftentimes given bouvine growth hormone to keep these milking cows producing an excess of milk. These hormones are present in the milk that is consummed. Additionally dairy puts an extra workload on the kidneys. The solutes are too large for cystic kidneys to effectively filter. Dairy tends to dehydrate the body. Salt that is added to cheese and ice creams plus the extra large molecular solutes, plus the dehydration all can raise blood pressure and decrease kidney functioning. Some of us have experienced by taking a bite of ice cream or a sip of milk, this is followed by an episode of awakening in the middle of the night with a cotton mouth, an intense thirst that one feels as if their tongue is totally parched and their mouth is filled with many bits of cotton puffs.
We have experienced this from all forms of dairy.
Fatty portions from animal proteins are much more harmful than the leaner sections, i.e. skim milk is preferable to cream. Limit fats to a maximum of one ounce per day. If one continues to eat meats and animal foods than any type of cheese needs to replace the meat for that day. The amount of cheese allowed is one ounce whereas the amount of lean meat is approximately three ounces once or twice a week.
Goat cheese is better than cow cheese, especially the type made in local farms and often sold at farmer's markets in the spring. Sometimes they make a salt free variety.
Cultured dairy is preferable i.e. buttermilk, yogurt, plugra butter. Keep butter fat intake to less than a tablespoon per day.

In addition to the proteins of dairy being particularly hard on cystic kidneys, the fats of animal proteins concentrate pesticides, DDT and other toxins. If you eat cheese try to find a type that preferably uses a vegetable rennet and is locally grown or organic, with grazing lands that are free of pesticides, hormones, chemicals.

POLYCYSTIC LIVER DISEASE AVOID ALWAYS
HORMONES - SOY & CLOVER DDT birth control pills, pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy, estrogen, estrogen disruptors, phytoestrogen, xenoestrogens all trigger liver cyst growth. For some this has meant considering alternatives to pregnancy. To others it manifests as avoiding bleach, alcohols, dry cleaned clothing and more. For others it is seeking alternatives to birth control pills, hormone replacement therapy and pregnancy.
Hormones are present in certain foods: dairy, cream, beef, especially marbled meats, ground meats, poultry, soy & clover, hormones: estrogen, false estrogen, phthaltates in cosmetics, phytoestrogens xenoestrogens such as DDT, pesticides, herbicides, bleach, chemicals that make you cough. Soy and clover both contain the harmful isoflavanoid GEN, that is an estrogen disruptor.
DAIRY - Milk, cream, cheese, ice cream all contain hormones. This is especially abundant in the fat, the cream, ice creams and cheeses. Milking cows are given a growth hormone, artificial bovine growth chemical called Posilac, to artificially keep cows producing more and more milk. Every sip of cow's milk contains 59 different bioactive hormones, according to endocrinologist Clark Grosvenor in the Journal of Endocrine Reviews in 1992. Milk has always been a hormonal delivery system, providing nursing infants with nature's perfect food for the young of its own species. Thousands of studies published in respected peer-reviewed scientific journals report that lactoferrins, immunoglobulins, and hormones in human breast milk provide enormous benefit for nursing humans. In other words, hormones in milk exert powerful effects. Each species of mammal has a different formula. Cow's milk contains hormones, and nursing on cow's milk will deliver these hormones to the human body. These hormones are vastly different than those in human milk.
CAFFEINE - Caffeine will trigger all cyst growth, even de-caf products have this same effect. Caffeine: black tea, white tea, green tea, chocolate, coffee, cola, even de-caf drinks, green tea, white tea
ALCOHOL - creates minuscule cellular damage within the liver. Some have noticed painful cystic livers from even inhaling alcohol in sprays such as cleaning solutions, windex, window cleaners and perfumes. Avoiding these lessens cystic liver symptoms especially pain.
YEAST- maple syrup, honey, date sugar, sugar, all of these become a ferment in the body and take on an alcohol ferment. The yeast like reaction is similar to the changing to wine from grape juice. Alcohol is very destructive to a cystic liver. Continue to eliminate vinegar, pastry, wheat, potato, tomato, peppers, eggplant, chocolate, coffee, white rice, soy, chicken, beef, ground meats, dairy, oily fish, poultry.
