PKD DIET

GA Tanner, PhD

G. Tanner PKD Researchers

Dr.Tanner's biography is here. There are several potassium citrate articles by the Tanners, written by both Judy and George Tanner. Their experiments show that alkalinizing with citrate is extremely helpful in slowing down PKD progression. What is potassium citrate? Simply a very effective alkalizer.

Painstakingly precise measurements gives conclusive proof that strong effective alkalizers such as potassium citrate and sodium citrate, are tremendously helpful in slowing down the progression of cystic organ disease. Their research has given those of us with PKD, needed scientific verification from our own comprehensive self-experimentation and observations that maintaining alkalinity does indeed decrease cystic organ symptoms and therefore could result in a decrease in cystic organ size.

The door has been opened. The possibility now exists. By making slight alkaline changes within our cystic bodies, we have the continued possibility of maintaining cystic organ health over an entire lifetime.

Potassium citrate improves renal function in PKD rats 1998

This was the first publication on the effectiveness of potassium citrate in diminishing PKD polycystic kidney disease. Sodium citrate is as effective as potassium citrate. Calcium citrate seems less so. The animals given potassium citrate lived 17 months as opposed to their counterparts who lived 10 months. Animals fed potassium citrate had smaller cystic kidneys and lived almost twice as long. Thanks to the continued work of these PKD researchers, taking potassium citrate is now recognized as a possible means for decreasing kidney cysts. It is an exclusion for participating in Tolvaptan clinical trials as it has been noted there is some evidence that it could help diminish kidney cyst size.

Citrate Therapy for PKD Rats 2000

Citrate salts have an alkalinizing effect in preserving kidney functioning and extend survival. Potassium helps. Citrate helps. But it is alkalinity that has the most positive effect in preserving kidney functioning.

Citrate Therapy for PKD Rats 2003

The earlier alkalinity is begun the better for the individual. Early alkalinity is better than alkalinity begun later in life.

Dietary potassium citrate does not harm the pcy mouse. 2005

It turns out the PKD model used actually had a disease that closely resembles human adolescent nephronophthisis. The PCY mouse preferred to dehydrate rather than drink water with the bitter taste of potassium citrate. Once the mechanism of instillation was changed this model also was not harmed by potassium citrate. Potassium citrate has been used for years to effectively treat kidney stones There are no literature reports of adverse reactions from taking monitored potassium citrate.

We are  sharing our experiences with PKD/PLD Diet, an adjunct diet envisioning it complementing a physician's prescribed medical therapy. Consider testing this with your doctor's prior knowledge, who can  adjust it according to your own uniqueness by adding it to your current  treatment.
