PKD Articles   Diminish Cyst Growth

The ability to diminish cyst growth lessens symptoms from ADPKD, ADPLD, and improves cystic organ functioning. To accomplish this without medications, some are trying diet, reducing animal proteins, assuring we remain alkaline by supplementing with alkalizers or diet, drinking 3 liters of water, reducing salt intake, avoiding stimulants that trigger cyclic AMP such as caffeine, tea, green tea, coffee, chocolate, de-caf drinks, maté tea, kola nut, and more. Some working with their nephrologists are additionally trying small amounts, as needed, of supplemental alkalizers such as potassium or sodium citrate. Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is an effective inexpensive alkalizer, but due to the nature of PKD, we are prone to form kidney stones, partly from our higher uric acid urinary levels and from the acidic producing cystic kidneys. By adding sodium bicarbonate to the mix, the carbonate ion flies off and hooks up with the calcium ion joining up to produce calcium carbonate, one of the most common kidney stones formed by PKD'rs. Whereas with citrate salts such as sodium citrate and potassium citrate and to a lesser extent calcium citrate, the citrate molecule flies off and is utilized by the kidney for energy. Here are some supplements and medications that may have the potential to reduce cyst growth.

The few medications that are thought to diminish cyst growth are water, tolvaptan, somatostatin analogues, octreotide, mTOR inhibitors, Roscovitine, Vasopressin receptor antagonists, Triptolide, Sirolimus, Everolimus, Angiotensin Receptor Blockers, ACE inhibitors, Colchicine, and many more awaiting to begin clinical trials.
