On these pages is something to try to see if this might diminish symptoms from severe liver cysts. Hormones, soy, and caffeine cause liver cysts to grow. This is known. Included among hormone disruptors and caffeine are: soy, flaxseed, fish oil, liver toxins, animal proteins, estrogen mimickers such as bleach and plastics and more. By purposefully minimizing exposure to hormones, estrogen, and estrogen like molecules, many have experienced a lessening of symptoms from liver cysts and a lessening of liver cyst numbers and size. How I determined which foods increased symptoms was by measuring my girth daily at the same hour and at the widest area, usually near the belly button. I would note what I had eaten the day before and eliminate it to see if the symptoms disappeared. Then I would try it again to see if I could reproduce the pain. I have gathered information also from others with liver cysts who have reported similar symptoms from foods, herbs, and toxins.

Follow your doctors advice especially if you have had an organ transplant or have diminished kidney functioning. In general, lowering the intake of proteins will diminish secretin release. This hormone is the trigger that tells cyclic AMP to begin filling liver cysts with fluid. An alkaline diet is helpful for maintaining the health of both kidneys and liver. What is alkaline for me, may not be alkaline for you. This is why urine testing each evening before bed will give a better indication that you are maintaining health. Locally grown foods are best especially if they are grown without the use of pesticides. I eat foods as close to the earth as possible - foods which are freshly picked - foods which have not gone through any refining process; such as supersweet white corn, as opposed to high fructose corn syrup or roasted beets in place of beet sugar, raw cane juice rather than refined sugar. If I am lucky enough to find organic foods, or a harvest which has been grown by bio dynamic methods, this is a real find. A fruit or vegetable that has ripened to its peak then plucked or fallen from the tree has such a unique sweet taste when it is immediately eaten. The sweeter a food tastes, generally the more alkaline it is and this seems to benefit the body richly. Early spring asparagus from my garden is a delight when eaten raw as I set out for an early morning walk or I might grab a few sprigs of parsley or thyme to munch on. Asparagus will make a body register acidic when testing with pH or litmus paper. This is because it clears so many toxins from the body that it produces an acidic reaction. This is the one time I enjoy being acid. Check out farmers’ markets where the locals sell their excess produce and question the growers if at all possible. I have found that some use the weed killer round up, and yet call themselves organic. Caution as this is toxic to the liver. It remains in the soil long after its use has been stopped. Researchers are beginning to find it is the cumulative effect of several perhaps weak estrogen mimickers that contribute toward becoming a strong estrogen disrupter that can intensify symptoms from liver cysts.

To follow is a list of items that seems to diminish liver cyst growth. We are each unique individuals in our own reactions to different foods, herbs, and supplements. USEFUL HERBS
Saffron
In my body I have observed that saffron seems to positively affect any inflammation within the liver while helping to alleviate tiny vessels from bursting. Additionally it minimizes liver pains and prevents reactions from a splurge or exposure to any liver toxins. If you are within the confines of a hospital, I asked that they refrain from using bleach in cleaning solutions for my room. I asked that they warn me if they were to spray for insects. Additionally I asked for non-plastic eating utensils. These are small things, but they greatly eased any discomforts and pains I may have been experiencing. I take saffron tea. To one cup of water add 1/4 teaspoon of saffron. Let it simmer on the stove under medium heat until a half a cup of the liquid tea remains. Strain, cool, and sip. Organic saffron is available from Vanilla Saffron Imports for $35. It tastes very bitter and will stain white countertops.
Milk Thistle
This is known for healing and soothing injured livers. Usually, I take two capsules, three times a day. On the rare occasions, if I find myself indulging in a small sip of fine French wine, I take 2 additional organic milk thistle that evening. For me this prevents me from experiencing liver pains. If I take this with a warm cup water with freshly squeezed lemon juice and a bit of tupelo honey this has been known to avert any kind of hung over feeling the following day.
Turmeric
This is an herb high in antioxidants and especially useful for healing the liver. Sometimes take one capsule three times a day from Tyler Encapsulations owned by Integrative Therapeutics Phytochemical. Now in Hawaii, I have found raw whole organic turmeric. I am using raw turmeric in place of the capsules.

USEFUL FOODS (organic)
Almonds
Almonds about 5-7 are good for the liver supplying it with necessary essential fatty acids. Almond butter is an alternative to margarine or butter.

Artichoke Globe and Sunchokes
This food is especially good for ailing livers. I sometimes take non-alcoholic artichoke extract. I dissolve a dropperful in a cup of warm water.
Beets
Broccoli - Broccoli Sprouts – DIM Diindolylmethane
Chestnuts This food is very good for livers and alkaline.
Cabbage Juice I cut a quarter wedge of raw cabbage and slice it small enough to fit within the hopper of a juicer. I add about 7 almonds to the cabbage while juicing it. I try to drink about a quarter cup of cabbage juice daily. I have found an unexpected side effect from drinking raw cabbage juice with almonds; it seems to take away gray. Cabbage is very high in boron. It was discovered that boron was a supplement very useful in preventing bone loss. The researchers said it was difficult to titrate the daily dose of boron without causing an overdose. By drinking cabbage juice, the body will take what it needs. Cabbage is also very high in Vitamin C. Caution with cruciform vegetables if you have thyroid difficulties.
Carrots
Cruciform Vegetables
Juices freshly pressed and drunk within 20 minutes
. . .Carrot Beet
. . .Apple Beet
. . .Carrot Parsley
. . .Cabbage Almond
. . .Apple
. . .Lemon juice
. . .Orange juice
. . .Melon juice

Nettle leaf Steamed is wonderful. This is high in potassium. Or while traveling I take several drops of nettle extract in a cup of warm water.
Olive oil Limit fat to an ounce a day. No more often than once a week – a liver cleanse, is one teaspoon of cold pressed virgin olive oil with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice as a liver flush. For essential fatty acids try hemp seed oil.
Parsley Lowers blood pressure. I munch on this daily, especially the flat leaf variety.
Himalayan Pink salt Replace table salt with pink Himalayan crystals also called halite. Limit sodium intake to less than 1200 mg
Spelt
Sunchokes These are also known as Jerusalem artichokes. They are gnarly brown roots below ground, which sprout a beautiful sunflower above. Once the flower dies, dig up the root and roast in the oven or peel and eat it raw. If you have too many from your harvest, store in sand for long term keeping.
Squash any variety:
Delicata
Butternut
Acorn
Pumpkin
Sweet Potato, yams, ube, purple, orange, white, yellow
Tupelo Honey This is a honey which is contains a high amount of laevulose. This type of a sugar bypasses the liver and is easily utilized by the body. It does not cause the mood swings of sucrose, fructose, or dextrose; nor does laevulose cause wide swings in insulin and blood sugar levels. Tupelo honey is a natural sweetener that has not been refined in anyway. Tupelo honey does not cause browning of the organs, which can lead to death of certain cells within organs such as the beta cells of the pancreas.
Yams

USEFUL SUPPLEMENTS (all natural food source)
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B12
Folic Acid
B complex
Magnesium (as prescribed)
Vitamin C rose hips
Calcium (as prescribed)
Turmeric
Strontium (currently looking into this for bone health)
Milk thistle
DIMs
Omega 3s

As my liver has become healthier, I take supplements on an as needed basis. If I am feeling uncomfortable or experiencing pain, then I will start with lemon juice diluted in hot water, then take a half a cup of saffron tea or some milk thistle capsules. For vitamin supplements, I follow the pattern of one month on, one month off. This timing allows the body to generate vitamins from within the foods I eat rather than relying too heavily on dietary enhancements. One of the key features of my lifestyle, which maintains my health, is the alkaline diet. I am not sure if I have become more sensitive, but I have been noticing more and more, if I eat something, inhale something, or even smell something detrimental to me, my body will react very quickly. The response can be as simple as a runny nose, or a slight cough, or burning of my ankles or increase in superficial blood vessels around my lower legs. If I continue to ignore these early symptoms, they can escalate and can produce huge blisters on my skin or even pain or puffiness or cause an orange-yellow coloring to appear around my eyes or the toxic culprit can trigger a migraine headache that may last several days. I know within moments that I have eaten something harmful. I get immediate stabbing stomach pains. For my omega 3s, I am taking organic hemp seed oil capsules. Flaxseed causes me great discomfort from my liver. Fish oil does the same only increased. I am taking hemp seed oil supplements as well as using hemp seeds in baking my non-yeasted spelt bread. There is a new GM omega 3 on the market called Arabidopsis – a relative of the cabbage. They created a new strain of Arabidopsis by adding two genes from algae and a third from a fungus. The gene-altered vegetable contains more omega-3 and -6 fatty acids than normal varieties. The oil rich plants are contamination free – unlike fish, which can contain mercury and PCBs. I have yet to try this. Send an email if you have tried hemp seed capsules and your experience. I am using a teaspoon of hemp seed over my salad greens.

AVOID increase LIVER CYST GROWTH
Hormones
False Estrogens
Estrogen Mimickers
Xenoestrogens
Phytoestrogens
especially if combined with xenoestrogen i.e. round up, pesticides, herbicides, bleach, chlorine and more
Caffeine

AVOID Chemicals that increase LIVER CYST GROWTH
Alcohol This includes wine, beer, ale, distilled liquors, as well as rubbing alcohol; alcohol contained in perfumes, after shave, and cleaning solutions. Inhaling alcohol components is a real pain trigger for me.
Ammonia Many floor-cleaning solutions contain ammonia. To clean the floor I use a simple wet cloth that has been statically charged to pick up lint. Another useful tool is the steamer. This plugs into the wall and has a long wand attached or a scrubbing brush. This device quickly rids bathrooms of mold and soap scum. It also will clean away grease from stovetops.
Chlorine Bleach is one of those chemicals so intertwined within the environment that trying to avoid it becomes a real detailed detective job. By avoiding bleach I have been rewarded with decreased liver pains and discomfort.
Bleach is used in city water. By leaving tap water (that has been treated with bleach) out overnight, the bleach will dissipate from the water. Bleach is used to whiten toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, coffee filters, and copy paper. The effect of bleach is cumulative over a lifetime. It is said that coffee filters may give one an exposure to bleach which then triggers the release of xenoestrogens, Purchase non-bleached coffee filters, paper, napkins, toilet tissue, tampons, etc. The EPA (environmental protection agency) has determined that using bleached coffee filters alone can result in a lifetime exposure to dioxin that exceeds acceptable risks.

Cleansers chemicals powders used to clean as well as dry cleaned clothing. These are strong xenoestrogens, false estrogens.
Herbicides
Oven Cleaners These immediately initiate a cough. The lungs and liver are somehow connected. I developed water within my lung following my liver resection surgery. I was told this is a common occurrence.
Powders
Soap powders
Solvents
Plastic
Pesticides
Window cleaners
often contain both ammonia and alcohol chemicals. These cleaning agents make use of an atomizer spray, which may become accidentally inhaled causing pain and inflammation to develop within the liver.
