Starfruit

Avoid starfruit

The first time ever star fruit nephropathy was reported was in 2001. Some PKD individuals can get kidney shut down from too many oxalates (contained in starfruit) resulting in irreversible kidney failure. Researchers induced this same syndrome in dehydrated rats. The final report is of an individual directly causing the same symptoms by ingesting oxalic acid.

Eating star fruit can be very dangerous, even deadly. Symptoms of star fruit intoxication include persistent hiccups, nausea, vomiting, agitation, insomnia, mental confusion and convulsions that occur within one to five hours of eating the fruit. The problem seems to be the high levels of oxalic acid (or oxalate) in this fruit that can accumulate in weakened kidneys. One PKD friend ate starfruit and got irreversible kidney failure. Avoid starfruit as it can be detrimental to PKD/PLD.

The first two cases: Patients developed nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and backache within hours of ingesting large quantities of sour carambola juice; then acute renal failure followed. Both patients needed hemodialysis for oliguric acute renal failure, and pathologic examinations showed acute oxalate nephropathy. To avoid acute oxalate nephropathy, pure sour carambola juice or mild diluted post pickled juice should not be consumed in large amounts, especially on an empty stomach or in a dehydrated state. Starfruit juice stored for 3 hours exerts toxic effect on rat liver at hepatocellular level.

Hepatocytes are the source for PLD Polycystic Liver Disease cysts.

Carambolas contains caramboxin and oxalic acid. Both substances are harmful to individuals suffering from kidney failure, kidney stones, or those under kidney dialysis treatment. Starfruit resembles mountain apples or Ackee. Both fruits have been implicated in an outbreak of hypoglycemic encephalopathy.

We are  sharing our experiences with PKD/PLD Diet, an adjunct diet envisioning it complementing a physician's prescribed medical therapy. Consider testing this with your doctor's prior knowledge, who can  adjust it according to your own uniqueness by adding it to your current  treatment.
