Parabens

Avoid Parabens

These are chemical compounds with a similar structure to human estrogen molecules. These are called estrogen mimickers, endocrine disruptors, false estrogens, xenoestrogens. They are a form of false estrogen and as such are capable of triggering liver cyst growth. Some common parabens found in personal care products included are methyl, propyl, butyl and ethyl parabens. Tucks is a product containing parabens. It is present in shampoos and conditioners. When the skin is soft and expanded like while taking a shower, more parabens can be absorbed. This can be avoided by a shower head that filters out bleach (often found in city water).

Endocrine disruptors are absorbed daily into the body via the skin and hair follicles. During the 1930's plastic was developed as an estrogen drug. Plastic is now known as an endocrine disruptor. Women with breast cancer are known to have an increased amount of methyl parabens in their brains. Here are some paraben free skin products. Also avoid products that contain soy, fish oil, flax, cod liver oil, wheat germ, sodium laurel sulfate, fluoride, cod liver oil. Over a lifetime methyl parabens can continue to harm liver cysts triggering growth, pain, and bloating.

In 2004 the media reported that English researchers identified parabens in samples of breast tumors. Parabens (alkyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid) are widely used as antimicrobial preservatives in thousands of cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceutical products, and even food.

Agents Subtle Change?

Dr. Elizabeth Smith has written that it is a known medical fact that estrogen stimulates breast cancer; anything absorbed through the skin may be as high as 10 times the concentration of an oral dose. In one study, methylparaben was injected under the skin and was found to have an estrogenic response on uterine tissues. Scientists observing these harmful effects on the uterus remarked that it is suggested that the safety in use of these chemicals should be reassessed.

Endocrine disruptors are transported into the body, daily, through the skin and hair when personal care products are used. A lubricant that does not contain methyl parabens is Pjur Eros silicone cream or bodyglide. There is a cream/gel form and a liquid form. To increase libido, try fresh raspberries and saffron. They act by softening pelvic musculature. Careful if you are pregnant; raspberries are to be avoided during the first trimester, due to its muscle relaxation effects. A saffron lemon cake with raspberry coulis, makes an interesting dessert.

Propyl Parabens

Manufacturers are adding propyl parabens to foods we eat. It acts as a synthetic estrogenic compound and can alter hormone signaling and gene expression (Routledge 1998; Terasaka 2006; Vo 2011; Wróbel 2014). A recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health suggested that exposure to propyl paraben might be associated with diminished fertility (Smith 2013). It is commonly found in processed pastries. Surprisingly (from the above article) propyl parabens are found even in some corn tortillas: Nuevo Leon Tortillas, La Banderita White Corn Tortillas, La Banderita Yellow Corn Tortillas, and Ole Mexican Foods Corn Tortillas.

Teflon and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA)

Teflon® is a brand name for a man-made chemical known as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). It has been in commercial use since the 1940s. Studies have found that it is present at very low levels in just about everyone's blood in the United States.

Exposure to PFOA increases the risk of certain tumors of the liver, testicles, mammary glands, and pancreas in these animals. In general, well-conducted studies in animals do a good job of predicting which exposures cause cancer in people. The major health effect linked with Teflon is the potential release of dangerous fumes from coated pans that are heated. These fumes can cause flu-like symptoms in humans (a condition known as polymer fume fever) and can be fatal to birds.

EWG commissioned tests to be conducted in 2003 which showed that in just two to five minutes on a conventional stove top, cookware coated with Teflon and other non-stick surfaces could exceed temperatures at which the coating breaks apart and emits toxic particles and gases.

If you must use non-stick then never preheat nonstick cookware at high heat. Empty pans can rapidly reach high temperatures. Heat at the lowest temperature possible to cook your food safely. Do not put nonstick cookware in an oven hotter than 500º degrees.
