Fish Oil

Avoid Fish Oil

Fish contains high levels of mercury and pesticides and herbicides from farm crops all which can increase liver cysts. When mercury levels become too high chelation therapy may have to be begun by your physician. if we continue with our current course of fish oil supplementation the world will be depleted of fish in the next 40 years. Another source should be found for omega 3 supplementation: hempseed or chia are two other sources. Eating purslane is also a source of essential fatty acids.

Fish oil supplements can cause PLD liver cysts to grow and PLD livers to ache. Fish odor can result after ingesting fish oil supplements especially when coupled with carnitine supplements. Carnitine is found in meats.

Methylmercury

Researchers have also discovered those taking fish oil supplements have higher mercury levels in their blood. This is even found with organic supplements. The problem with eating fish is it may contain high levels of mercury, called methylmercury. Methylmercury is toxic and is absorbed into the fish from the water they swim in. Fish can also consume mercury from eating other fish. Scientists have found that larger fish higher up in the food chain (shark and swordfish) have higher tissue concentrations of mercury (1 µg per gram of fish weight). Smaller fish, such as tuna, trout, pike and bass, have lower levels of 0.1 - 0.5 µg/gram. Research shows there's a direct correlation between how much fish you eat and your relative mercury levels in your body.

Fish oil has a high mercury content; some species are endangered; and if you have liver cysts, fish oil can be detrimental. Fish oil tested by a laboratory was all found to contain toxic methyl-mercury. However consuming fish also can provide the body with valuable selenium. It is a balance that each of us must determine for ourselves. Many have noticed that as we age eating fish causes us to spill protein in our urine. If you choose to eat fish, opt for fish lower in mercury and lower in fat, less than 1.5%. Once the gallbladder has been removed, usually following a liver resection or a transplant, lower fat meals are preferable to help minimize symptoms. Farmed fish, especially salmon, pollute our waterways further and contaminate fish in the wild. Chlorine bleach from city water dumped into waterways is causing certain susceptible fish to develop dual sexual organs.

Prescribed Fish Oil

If it works for you and gives no increase in PLD symptoms, then stick with it. However, do question your doctor if there might be an alternative.

Avoid Cod Liver Oil

This can cause harm to a liver and to cystic organs.

Cod liver oil was discovered in the sewers of England several hundred years ago by starving children who drank it and scientists noticed they did not get rickets.  It is best to avoid today's cod liver oil, ↑ mercury, ↑ pesticides, ↑ herbicides, it has not been standardized as to the ratio of vitamin A & Vitamin D. Some cod liver oil contain toxic doses of Vitamin A, others contain different quantities. In some third world countries, there is a deficiency in fat soluble vitamins. In more prosperous countries there is not this deficiency. This affects the hosts infection rate. Still it is recommended in Northern countries such as Norway, to continue to take cod liver oil to prevent osteopenia that comes about with aging.

We are  sharing our experiences with PKD/PLD Diet, an adjunct diet envisioning it complementing a physician's prescribed medical therapy. Consider testing this with your doctor's prior knowledge, who can  adjust it according to your own uniqueness by adding it to your current  treatment.
