Celery

Avoid Celery

Celery enzymes can cause cyst fluid accumulation enlarging kidney cysts. It retains pesticides in high quantities and with its added diuretic properties celery is to be avoided with PKD/PLD. Pesticides were found on 94 percent of the celery tested. 29 pesticides were found in celery, one of the highest of all plants. It is also high in coumarin, caution to be taken by those on blood thinners. Celery can cause phytophotodermatitis. Take caution with sun exposure.

It is too bad that celery stores all pesticides and herbicides up through the roots. It is highly alkaline with many uses: celery seed made into pills for pain relief was described by Aulus Cornelius Celsus around AD 30, celery seeds contain 3-n-butylphthalide lowering blood pressure in rats. In 2013, 30 patients with mild to moderate hypertension were given 150 mg per day of celery seed extract. This decreased both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Bergapten in the seeds can increase photosensitivity, use caution with essential oil externally. Bright sunshine should be avoided. The oil and large doses of seeds should be avoided during pregnancy, as act as a uterine stimulant. Seeds for cultivation are not suitable for eating as they are often treated with fungicides.

Dermatitis

Celery, celery root, contain toxins called psoralens, aka furocoumarin. Psoralens can cause phytophotodermatitis. Sensitivity to sunlight, caused by contact with a plant. Handling celery & sunbathing can lead to bad sunburn, rashes, blisters, and skin discoloration.

Urinary Retention

Celery is a cholinesterase inhibitor. It inhibits the acetylcholinesterase enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, thereby increasing both the level and duration of action of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. This can result in urinary retention or a full bladder that gets fuller and fuller with the inability to urinate.

The following medications are not to be taken with celery as taking them together may increase urinary retention symptoms:

Pesticides

Unfortunately celery does retain more pesticides than other foods. These pesticides are also known to cause urinary retention especially when coupled with celery.

Testosterone

Celery also raises testosterone levels. This can help induced testicular damage from DEHP. However elevations of testosterone increases PLD symptoms.

Celery Fluid

Mannitol-enhanced, fluid-phase endocytosis in celery.
