PKD - Health our experiences

PKD  Polycystic Kidney Disease
Kidneys contain multiples cysts
plant based DIET
maintain ALKALINITY
correcting ANEMIA
lessening PROTEINURIA
diminish CYST GROWTH

There are some things we cannot alter that possibly affect the developing manifestations of polycystic kidney disease PKD.

For instance, we cannot change if we have inherited PKD1 or PKD2 gene. PKD2 has a delay of perhaps 12 years before cystic kidneys may show symptoms requiring any treatment.

If we are male, then high blood pressure and LVH left ventricular hypertrophy seems to occur earlier.

If we are female with liver cysts, complications occur sooner and with more severity among females.

Included among many personal options within our own ability to reach, are deciding which foods we choose to eat. We can modify our exposure to chemicals. We can adjust how much exercise we do. We can regulate how well our blood pressure is controlled. We can decide how much water we drink. With attention to many of these details we can help influence that we remain among the 40% of PKD'rs with healthy kidneys throughout this life span. Yes this is correct. 40% of PKD'rs never ever need dialysis or transplant.

DIET with normal kidney functioning, one alkaline diet would be low in salt, a plant based diet geared toward kidney health, with an abundance of starchy vegetables: rutabagas, turnips, sweet potatoes, beans, brown rice, sweet corn, oats, spelt, rye, other whole grains and a few alkaline nuts added such as: almonds, chestnuts, coconut. A neutral protein plant based diet - 0.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight; that avoids table salt maintaining sodium intake at less than 1200 mg/day. Daily enjoy potassium rich produce. Drink 2 liters water. Some are trying 4 - 8 Liters of water per day. Allow the body to take in EAA essential amino acids daily.and EFA essential fatty acids. Ask your doctor about supplementing with vitamins and minerals particularly vitamin B6, B12, folic acid daily (if you are vegan) and Vitamin C with rose hips. Avoid all caffeine. (coffee, chocolate, black tea, green tea, white tea cola, de-caf.) If your diet permits, try chamomile, rooibos, hibiscus, thyme, saffron, rose hips, linden flower, or veronica tea. For a little bubbly, try cranberry, apple or grape juice mixed with Perrier mineral water. Remain alkaline.

• Eat foods in season and close to a home grown state with little processing.
• Locally grown is best.
• Organic is second best.
• Fresh produce is third.
• Frozen is fourth.
• Try to avoid canned, prepared, fried, and microwaved food.
Ask to see the renal dietitian for an alkaline diet calibrated specifically for you. An alkaline vegan diet that avoids all animal proteins (ground meats, dairy, egg whites, milk, cheese, beef, pork, chicken), soy proteins, yeast, alcohol, concentrated sugars seems to make us feel better. Fruits and Vegetables to avoid: salted foods, tomato, potato, eggplant, peppers, celery, starfruit, strawberries, plums, prunes, soy, margarine, crisco, potato chips and peanuts. While kidney functioning is still excellent, dietary things that help PKD are high potassium foods; plant based diets with an emphasis on raw fruits and vegetables; whole food starches such as corn on the cob, sweet potatoes, rutabagas, turnips, winter squash. Include a few selected pre-soaked grains (spelt, quinoa, rye, oats, kasha, brown rice) and pre-soaked nuts (almond, coconut, chestnut). Enjoy plenty of leafy greens, broccoli, radish, and below ground root crops. Soak all beans, legumes, grains, seeds and nuts before eating. This lowers their phytic acid content, making these foods more digestible and alkaline.
pH testing tape ALKALINITY Maintain alkalinity by checking urinary pH at night.. Read about potassium citrate a potent alkalizer, and how to test urinary pH,
BLOOD PRESSURE Maintain a consistent low blood pressure between 100/70 - 110/70 - 120/80.
ANEMIA Correct anemia. Anemia puts an extra load upon the heart as the heart muscle pumps harder to circulate the anemic blood throughout the entire body. This forces a weak heart muscle to develop. In enlarging, the heart muscle becomes less efficient as a pump. This can lead to left ventricular hypertrophy, LVH, and an earlier death from heart disease; the most common cause of death from PKD.
PROTEINURIA If present, diminish spilling of protein in the urine. One can test urinary proteins with a dipstix called albustix available 100 for $35 through Canada.
CYST GROWTH Do what you can to diminish cyst growth by avoiding all caffeine; minimizing kidney inflammation; keeping blood pressure low.
KIDNEY BLOOD FLOW Maintain a good blood supply to the kidneys. Rest when needed. Certain blood pressure medications increase kidney perfusion. Laying supine increases kidney blood flow.
AVOID KIDNEY TOXINS Question all medicines and ask about an alternative for any that may harm your kidneys or liver. For a list of herbs harmful to the kidney, click here. For a list harmful to livers, click here. Avoid over the counter preparations such as: aspirin, tylenol, NSAIDs, phenacetin, ephedrine compounds and more. Avoid alcohol and caffeine. For habits that are harmful to the kidneys, liver and longevity, click here.
WATER To read about water as a possible treatment for PKD, click here.
EXERCISE Gentle non-contact-sports like walking daily is ideal for maintaining health. This aids the blood circulation; keeps the body toned; prevents osteoporosis; and helps keep a good blood flow to all the body organs including the kidneys. Running marathons, participating in triathlons, while vigorous, can cause the healthiest body to spill protein in the urine. With PKD we wish to diminish spilling of protein in the urine. Gradually work up to daily aerobic exercise increasing it steadily and checking for proteins in urine. Runners live longer with fewer disabilities.
