Avoid. A teaspoon of safrole made from the bark of the tree is highly toxic and the oil can kill an adult. It is very carcinogenic. Banned by the FDA in the USA. The flavoring seen today is usually imitation. Filé powder, also called gumbo filé, for its use in making gumbo, is a spicy herb made from the dried and ground leaves of the sassafras tree that do not contain safrole.
