The ripe, dried pod is often ground to carob powder, which is used to replace cocoa powder. Carob bars, an alternative to chocolate bars, are often available in health-food stores. Chocolate contains chemical substances from the same family as caffeine, which is found in coffee and tea. Caffeine in chocolate enhances the action of cAMP by inhibiting its breakdown, resulting in more circulating cAMP, which increases cyst growth creating more cysts, increasing organ size and increasing symptoms.
