Azodicarbonamide

Avoid Azodicarbonamide

Azodicarbonamide or ADA is a substance contained in yoga mats approved by the FDA for use as a whitening agent in cereal flour and as a dough conditioner in bread baking. The use of ADA as a whitening agent and dough conditioner is not necessary to bake bread; there are alternative ingredients approved for use available. It is present in the USA in over 500 commercially prepared breads, pastries, cakes, and more. It has been banned in Australia and Europe as a food additive. Since August 2005. Europe has also banned its use in the manufacture of plastic containers that come into contact with food.

Side effects

It is linked to asthma, respiratory problems, cancer and skin irritation. A one-year study by the WHO found rats and dogs exposed to ADA diets contained various levels of biurea, a chemical created from azodicarbonamide. One rat in the high-exposure group died, and most of the dogs in both groups died. The breakdown of azodicarbonamide yields semicarbazide, a carcinogen.
